The Silent Movie Theatre (formerly home to Cinefamily, now Brain Dead Studios) has a complicated history worthy of a blockbuster drama. The original owner, John Hampton, started the theater in 1942, showing his personal film collection at a time when most studios were destroying old silent prints. Hampton used toxic chemicals in his bathtub above the theater to preserve his films—unwittingly exposing himself to toxins that hastened his demise in 1990 from cancer. But one night in 1997, while visitors were watching a film, Austin was shot to death in the lobby by a hitman. The whole thing turned out to be a murder-for-hire conspiracy hatched by Austin’s lover and theater projectionist James Van Sickle, who later claimed that Austin signed the theater over to him in a hand-written will.

There are dark times ahead for the Queen Mary, and this is great news for the ship and fans of horror events. The Walt Disney Concert Hall holds a showing of a horror film classic accompanied by organ on Halloween night and this year they’re showing the 1925 silent film version of The Phantom of the Opera. The film will be accompanied by the concert hall’s monster pipe organ, played by Clark Wilson, one of the most prominent organ virtuosos and conservators. The concert starts at 8 p.m., so there’s time to grab an early pre-show dinner.
LA City Council has very tough choices to make about potential budget cuts
Each holiday takes a turn for the worst, trapping visitors in a time loop of terror. This unique and immersive experience is sure to leave visitors feeling haunted long after they leave. Most infamously, the naked body of tourist Elisa Lam was found in a rooftop water tank; surveillance video showed Lam acting oddly in the elevator.

Bob Baker’s Halloween Spooktacular
This haunt takes visitors on a journey through the chilling tales that linger within its walls. The museum is designed to disorient visitors and heighten their sense of fear. Once you enter, watch out for the museum’s exhibits as they come to life. The brave souls that venture inside will encounter possessed souls feasting on fear and despair. This gorgeous Japanese restaurant at the top of Sycamore Avenue in Hollywood features sweeping views of the L.A. Pull up a barstool next to the phantom of a former bartender who has been spotted around the bar.
The Theater of Terror is a must-visit for horror movie fans who are seeking to experience the thrill of being part of a live-action horror movie. The studio complex where such legendary Tinseltown films as Gone with the Wind and Raging Bull were filmed was built in 1918 by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince. Ince died in 1924, after falling ill on newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst’s yacht during a star-studded cruise and dinner, celebrating Ince’s 42nd birthday. Some say Ince’s ghost still shows up for work at his beloved former studio, and can be seen and heard walking through walls and criticizing management. We’re not talking about manufactured scares at haunted houses; we searched the spookiest nabes for horror hot spots—and consulted our friends over at Ghost Hunters of Urban Los Angeles (GHOULA). Haunted spots for years, and used to host monthly Spirits with Spirits mixers (at some of the city’s spookiest venues and on ghost tours) that’ve since morphed into a podcast.

As the moon cast its eerie glow each Halloween, I reveled in the ritual of swinging open the gates, inviting all who dared to step within. With an ominous invitation, I challenged them to partake in a celebration of despair and horror, an unholy spectacle that would etch its malevolent mark upon the souls of those who ventured into my realm. The Roosevelt competes with the Knickerbocker for most celebrity hauntings. One psychic says he’s also detected Humphrey Bogart, Carmen Miranda, and Betty Grable. There’s also a cold spot in the Blossom Room (the first home of the Oscars), near where a dapperly-dressed ’30s-era man is said to hang around. Enter the nightmarish Haunted HoliDAZE, where twisted celebrations from an entire year repeat in a disturbing flashback.

Her form seemed to materialize from the shadows, her pale visage veiled in a shroud of spectral energy. Missshell’s eyes, deep and haunting, bore witness to a turbulent past, as if they held the weight of the world’s despair. Though her lips remained sealed, her intent was clear – she sought to enforce a silence that bordered on the sinister. I tried asking her questions to decipher her intent, her reason to be at my carnival, and her identity.
CARNIVAL FOOD
Now closed, the theatre was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1993. The immediate properties around this strange triangle of land in Beverly Hills have taken on a mysterious aura. In 1946, a plane piloted by Howard Hughes slammed into a row of houses and came to rest at 808 N. Linden in 1947, and Jan Berry of Jan & Dean was nearly killed in a real life Dead Man’s Curve accident in 1966. In November 2010, Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen was shot in her car at the corner of Sunset and Whittier. Whittier, adding to the legacy of one of the most sinister intersections in Los Angeles.

Instead, we co-existed in this realm of shadows and silence, relying on each other to weave a tapestry of fear that left our visitors trembling. The familiar surroundings had grown tiresome, their secrets laid bare. I yearned for a fresh canvas upon which to paint my sinister visions. For years, I had run a thriving carnival, delighting visitors with the macabre and the mysterious. The House of Horror Carnival had been my pride and joy, until the day it was massacred by a colossal hurricane that had ravaged Miami.
These haunted houses are not for the faint of heart, and you definitely won’t want to venture inside without a friend. Scare-X Studios is a unique and immersive haunted attraction that allows visitors to become the stars and take center stage to capture unforgettable haunting memories. It’s an exciting experience designed to give you the Instagrammable moments perfect for your stories. Once you enter this haunt, you’ll be taken on a journey through the sinister secrets of past cinematic horror films. Designed to envelop visitors in darkness and disorient them as they approach the secrets of the theater, this experience is sure to bring nostalgia and terror to those who dare enter it.
The basement, which is filled with tunnels, is supposedly haunted by a couple of mobsters, at least one of whom also likes to visit the Comedy Store. Dan Aykroyd was living here when he got the idea for Ghostbusters—he says he was inspired by the house’s extreme hauntedness (door locking, lights going on and off, a piano playing itself). The ghosts could be former occupants “Mama” Cass Elliot or Natalie Wood. From mouthwatering burgers and Mexican delights to sweet churros and dreamy milkshakes, House of Horror offers over 15 top-notch food options . Los Chingones Mexican Grill, La PicaƱa Grill, Rancho Mateo, and more eateries offer diverse flavors that complement the chilling experience.
For children ages three to six, a Child Ticket may be purchased, which includes admission to the carnival, but not to the haunted houses. This immersive theater experience is hosted by the Downtown Repertory Theater Company who previously put on a similar immersive show called Witch! In this Halloween-themed event, guests will have one-on-one encounters with performers and explore a haunted mausoleum and abandoned chapel. Complimentary drinks will be offered before the show, and comfortable clothing and walking shoes are recommended (we’re serious about the exploring part). The Silent Movie Theatre is said to be haunted by the ghosts of its first two owners.
